Making Space for Culture: On Access and the Absence of Creative Infrastructure
Space, access, sustainability and who gets to take part in cultural life.
What does it mean to have cultural infrastructure if the artists who need it cannot afford to use it, and the audiences it was built for cannot reach it? This conversation looks at the shrinking ecosystem of theatres, cinemas, galleries, rehearsal rooms and other cultural spaces in Nigeria. Beyond lamenting what has disappeared, the panel asks what can be built next: shared venues, converted buildings, university partnerships, community theatres, private investment and collaborative ownership models.
